Merrillville, Indiana is a city located in the state of Indiana. It was officially incorporated in 1971, when the majority of Ross Township residents voted in favor of the incorporation. The city is situated 33 miles southeast of the Loop and is known as the “Center of Northwest Indiana”. It is home to a variety of restaurants, banks, malls, and businesses that are typical of late 20th century American suburbs.Merrillville covers an area of approximately 25.5 square miles and has a population of around 35,000 people.
It is part of Lake County and is bordered by Ross Township to the north and Hobart Township to the south. The city is served by the Merrillville Community School Corporation, which consists of seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school.The city government of Merrillville is headed by a mayor and a seven-member city council. The mayor and council members are elected to four-year terms. The city council meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm in the City Hall Council Chambers.
